What an amazing nght!

After a short but intense rehearsal period, the Sydney cast tore up the postage stamp stage of the Supper Club for the 2008 Sydney Mardi Gras.

Jack Webster lead the cast as the Greta, singing, acting and dancing up a storm. His performance was nothing short of incredible, finding depth, humour, strength and compassion. He was matched ably by Lyall Brooks, reprising his role as Jakob, from the 2004 Melbourne production - as narrator and second in command.

The all-star ensemble included Alex Jenkins as Jan - leading a slinky and sexy "Sleeping with the Enemy". Alex demonstrated his versatility with an additional number of smaller, but distinct characters.

Darren Mapes as Willem, moved the audience with a heartfelt "Final Bow", a song of aching loss and grief.

Ross Burford
Scott Ogier as Jopie, was alternately hilarious and romantic, with two stunning duets with Ross Burford, playing the German soldier Kurt. These roles are the emotional heart of the show, and were served by two outstanding performers. A special thanks to Ross who flew himself from Perth to be a part of the show.

Finally, but certainly not least Hayden Tee showed an astonishing range of character as the determined but troubled Rost. His rendition of "Only Fools" was one of the highlights of the night, demonstrating the equal parts rage, passion and love that drive this song.

The cast were supported by Director and Greta graduant Will Conyers, who will also direct the work in New York. Composer / lyricist Sean Peter acted as Musical Director, and the magnificent Velalien was her ususal indispensable self.

Sean says "I know Barry and Will and I all got a heap out of doing the reading. It just makes it incredibly clear where we need to do work on the show, and makes it just that bit tighter and clearer for the New York season. I know Barry and I were incredibly grateful for all the work put in by everyone. The performances were just fantastic, and for me I thought it was musically the strongest the show has ever been.

"It was such a great experience revisiting my first show, and seeing so many old friends at the reading as well. We were stoked by the turnout - especially for a stormy Wednesday night, and the audience really loved the show. I love readings, there's nothing better than watching actors work hard. I find when I go to theatre, it often feels like the performers are on autopilot, so there's nothing like a reading to keep the actors on their toes!"

The pictures in this article were taken during the rehearsal period, and thanks to Ross Burford for taking them.
